Library Code of Conduct

  • Smoking/food/drink/weapons/roller blades/roller skates are not permitted in the library.
  • Noise must be kept to a minimum; excessively loud conversation or other deliberate noise-making will not be tolerated; radios, cassette or CD players that are audible to patrons (even with the use of headphones) will not be permitted.
  • Loud talking on cell phones is not permitted in the library at any time.
  • Use of electronic equipment (with the exception of laptop or notebook computers) or electrical appliances is not permitted in the library.
    Use of cameras or recording equipment is not permitted in the library at any time without prior consent from the Library Dean.
  • Library computer use is limited to electronic retrieval of appropriate material (access to pornography is an inappropriate use).
  • Library telephones are for the use of library staff only and may not be used by patrons. (A courtesy telephone to access the New College campus is available for use.)
  • Proper attire is required of all library users at all times.
  • Appropriate behavior and language is expected of all library users at all times.
  • Children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
  • Library users must cooperate with library staff and security personnel when asked to do so.
  • Library users may not post signs or notices anywhere except on the two exterior bulletin boards.
  • With the exception of emergencies, library users may only exit the building at the main exit; library users and classroom students are expected to immediately vacate the building when the fire alarm sounds.
  • Library users may not tamper with electronic equipment; move, rearrange or remove furniture or art objects; damage or destroy any part of the collection.
  • All materials must be properly checked-out at the Circulation Desk before being removed from the library.
  • Group study rooms are for groups of 3 or more for the sole purpose of academic pursuits; use is limited to 2-hour periods.
  • No part of the library or classrooms may be used for commercial enterprise; no part may be used to conduct classes or meetings without the consent of the Library Dean.
  • Harassment of library patrons or staff will not be tolerated.
  • University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee and New College students, faculty and staff have priority in the use of all library facilities.
